Longue Vue Club is the premier family club in Pittsburgh and offers its members a championship golf course, pool, tennis and paddle courts, skeet shooting range, and phenomenal dining. Longue Vue is currently ranked 14th in Golf Digests list of top courses in the state of Pennsylvania. Longue Vue also was awarded the prestigious honor of being named co-host for the 121st United States Amateur Championship in August of 2021 with nearby Oakmont Country Club. In 1920, Pittsburgh businessman Edward W. Mudge spoke with several peers and local prominent executives about plans to establish a golf course. The founders all enjoyed the game of golf which was just beginning to sweep the country. One week later they acquired a farm and adjacent lots with 370 acres dramatically sited atop the highest point in Penn Hills Township and commanding a sweeping panorama of the Allegheny River Valley. The founding fathers named it Longue Vue (French for "long view") Club. Legend has it that when Longue Vue couldn't meet expenses during the depression, the gents rolled dice or cut cards to see who would cover the shortfall that year. Not surprisingly, Longue Vue became known as "The Millionaires Club.” In addition to golf, the Longue Vue stables were erected in 1922, and equestrians trotted along six miles of bridle paths. While relatively short-lived, the club’s first recreational activity is memorialized by the riding saddle in Longue Vue’s crest. In 2020 the Club celebrated its Centennial. Longue Vue’s golf course was designed by Robert White, a St. Andrews native and former president of the PGA of America. The Club opened for play in late 1922, The first official round played by professionals took place May of 1923. A decade and a half later, in 1932, A.W. Tillinghast improved upon the original White design with the alteration of several of original holes. Longue Vue’s design incorporates several templates of the Macdonald/Raynor school, including a Redan, an Eden and an Alps Punchbowl. Situated high on the bluffs overlooking the Allegheny River, Longue Vue boasts a unique and challenging design, championship caliber conditioning and an enjoyable layout. Despite the hilly nature of the property, it is easily walkable and accordingly, Longue Vue has a strong caddie program. The greens staff maintains tournament level conditions throughout the year with firm fairways and fast greens. During the last 10 years, Longue Vue has executed many improvements intended to strengthen the classic design and further improve conditioning. Recently Longue Vue retained Andrew Green as its architect going forward. The 6,720 yard par 70 layout presents a variety of challenges for skilled players and Longue Vue has hosted many State and Local tournaments throughout its history. Local favorite, Arnold Palmer, won the one of his five West Penn Amateur titles at Longue Vue in 1950.
